　　咆哮山莊與畫眉田莊三十年的歲月，在女管家艾倫．丁恩與倫敦來的紳士洛克伍德在交談中以倒敘法重現。

　　《咆哮山莊》裡面有駭人的陰謀，在陰森恐怖的復仇氣氛下也有刻骨銘心的愛戀，還有文明禮教與原始感性的衝突。如凱瑟琳對內莉述說夢境中的天：
　　I was only going to say that heaven did not seem to be my home; and I broke my heart with weeping to come back to earth; and the angels were so angry that they flung me out, into the middle of the heath on the top of Wuthering Heights; where I woke sobbing for joy. That will do to explain my secret, as well as the other. I’ve no more business to marry Edgar Linton than I have to be in heave; and if the wicked man in there had not brought Heathcliff so low, I shouldn’t have thought of it. It would degrade to marry Heathcliff, now; so he shall never know how I love him; and that, not because he’s handsome, Nelly, but because he’s more myselft than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same, and Linton’s is as different as a moonbeam from lightning, or frost from fire.

　　在老恩肖死後，希斯克里夫受盡亨德利的虐待，亨德利剝奪希斯克里夫學習、受教育的機會，並將他視為一個只懂幹活的動物來奴役。當希斯克里夫終於等到亨德利的醉死，他開始向亨德利的後代，哈里頓．恩肖，颳起他父親的曾經颳在希斯克里夫受身上狂風，看「它是不是也會跟另外一株一樣，長得彎彎曲曲。」

　　凱瑟琳選擇了去愛埃德嘉．林敦，地位、財富、文明、禮教、上流的象徵，但她卻無法割捨原始、感性的靈魂，希斯克里夫。她自白：「我對林敦的愛，就像林中的樹葉。我很清楚，當冬天使樹木發生變化時，時光也會使葉子發生變化。而我對希斯克里夫的愛，恰似腳下亙古不變的岩石，雖然它給你的歡樂看起來很少，可是必也不少…」

　　或許讀得多的人，都會長一種眼，叫做狗眼，有道是「狗眼看人低」。人們的優越感，或許就是建築在禮教、文明、學識與膚色上。《咆哮山莊》中，亨德利．恩肖出於對希斯克里夫的憎恨與歧視，剝奪他受教的機會並將之貶為牲畜，埃德嘉．林敦看不起希斯克里夫的粗俗、野蠻，小凱瑟琳與小林敦聯合看不起自己的表哥，哈里頓．恩肖，嘲笑他目不識丁、「不正常」。

　　故事的最後，希斯克里夫逝世，小凱瑟琳與哈里頓和好，處得相當親密，而洛克伍德「不由自主地咬住了嘴唇，後悔自己丟掉了本該擁有的機會，現在只落得站在一旁，對這個迷人的美女乾瞪眼」。或許這就是文明人的理性與多慮，在機會面前思忖自己「安寧的心靈」，而後又站在一旁乾瞪眼。
